INCREASED TRAM FARES.

STATEMENT BY MR. W A KNOCK CHALLENGED. Mr. T. Bloodworth, who is a candidate lor the city mayoralty, said to-day-that it had been reported that Mr. J. A. Warnock, in the course of his speech at Remuera last evening, had said that he opposed an increase in tram fares on the ground that the City Council had not had before it a balance-sheet showing the linancial position of the undertaking. Mr. Bloodworth said that the statement was contrary to fact. A proposal to increaso the tram and bus fares came before the council on March 17, when a division was called for and the names of the councillors voting were recorded in the minute book of the council. He said that he had inspected the minutebook, which showed that the voting was: For increased tram fares: Councillors Allum, Brownlee, Covle, Crookes, Donald, Melville, Robertson, Paterson, Knight, Court, Thompson, Warnock and the Mayor, 13. Against increased train fares: Councillors Phelan, Bloodworth, Brinsden, Endv and C. F. Bennett, 5.
