AUCKLAND 'VARSITY YEAR. PROFESSIONAL CLASSES POPULAR, \ BIG INCREASE OF STCDENT& Aspirants for university degree* end others who seek to profit by the facilities offering for higher education In Auckland show a marked increase in numbers This year. Although the University College has been open for only four weeks the roll total is above the eleven hundred mark, compared with 9SO at tho frame time last year, and & growth is noticeable every week. All the science departments have shown an increase in numbers, and the school of engineering has clearly been benefited by the raising of it* status in accordance- with the decision of the New Zealand University Council in February last. It is hoped by tie college authorities that the arrangements for evening classes wiD be fully availed of by tho youthful members of the engineering profession in the city, and that special advantage will be taken of the teaching that is intended to qualify members for proficiency in the various brandies of the trade. It is realised that there is a large potential demand for education of this kind. The school of architecture has again inrre-ased in numbers, showing a further development in its importance as a professional school in the Dominion. Every veiling , tho studio is open to a late hour, and Professor C. R. Knight reports that there is an increasing proportion of full time students. The school continues to receive the sympathetic support and interest of the architects throughout the country, and in this respect shows an example to other professions. In connection with the School of Law, an endeavour has been made to fink up more closely with ibe activities of the legal profession. The school was opened by Mr. Justice Herdman, sad the Auckland Law Society has takes steps to set up a special committee to confer with Professor R. M. Algie, professor of law, ia order to farther the interests of law students. Exempted Students. A feature of the arrangements for study this year deals with "TPinpfad students. Under the new regulations decided upon by the Hew Zealand University Council, the Auckland University College Council has decided that there shall be no terms examination this year for absentees from lectures, who have enrolled as exempted students. The chancellor's decision was that tbti senate's action in discontinuing terms examinations for this class of students should come into force compulsory next year, and was optional among the colleges this year.
