A British mission is investigating the industrial conditions in the United States and Canada.

In a report just issued the members say adaptability is shown by all the people engaged in industry for the purpose of promoting efficiency and productivity and eliminating waste.

The report says it is particularly noticeable that intelligent stabilisation has reduced the cost of manufacture and of stocks carried and has prevented the risk of depreciation. The instalment purchase plan, which is widely prevalent, resulted in a retail trade last year amounting to £1,200,000,000.

The report eulogises the system of giving incentives to workers to produce a higher output. These include better pay to the more valuable workers.

The mission records the formation of trusts, and states that large amalgamations of similar industries are no more difficult to control than smaller units.

The spirit animating the workshop is the most important and outstanding feature which distinguishes successful schemes in America from similar schemes in Britain.
