FRENCH ANGRY.
Inadequacy of Defence
Force. WILL NOT YIELD. (Received 1.30 p.m.l LONDON, April 1. The "Times" Paris correspondent says that the authorities vigorously contest the British reports of the inadequacy of French troops at Shanghai. Newspapers declare that the force was made in accordance with the British policy. The Government still hopes to benefit from the fact that the French so far have been spared the intense hatred and the deliberate attacks to which British, Americans and Japanese have been exposed. They do not wish to be embroiled in conflict, although they will defend their concession if attacked. On the contrary the French at present have no intention of yielding to the Cantonese. They are determined, not to modify the tenure of the concessions until a proper Government is constituted.
