" " I I Sour Sausages Cause the Trouble. 1 laintiff. in the w-itness l>ox. .—aid the , trouble aro-e in Australia when some I of the men declared that the meat which I witness cooked for the firemen's me-* ' was batl. As a matter of fart, it wa-i not liad. Further trouble was caused \ on the ship's arrival at Auckland, when the men complained about some sausages, which, as a matter of fact, were sour. Witness immediately cooked other meat for them. Lasting trouble was created. Mr. Cahill: As a matter of fact, the ship was held up for some months on account of the refusal of the firemen to go on duty with Arnold a- cook. His Honor: What! Held up on account of the sausages? Mr. Cahill: They were the oiiginal cause. I suppose. Witness, under further examination.! said there were fights and disturbances on the ship, and some of the firemen were intoxicated. There was a sequel in the Police Court, when some of the men were convicted for refusing to perform their allotted tasks. Mr. Vialoux (cross-examining): Is it true that your galley was in a dirty condition and you had not scrubbed it out since leaving Newcastle, New South Wale's?— That is not true. I I think the sausages were bad?— They were sour, but I had them condemned. His Honor: Proltably they were selfcondemnatory. (Laughter.) Mr. Vialoux: Is it true you were dismissed from the union? Witness: No. Ls it true that you were convicted of theft of ship's stores on another vessel in December, 1925!— What has that to do with it ? Mr. Vialoux (to his Honor): I submit thai he was dismissed from the union because of his conviction. I propose to prove that conviction. The case is proceeding.
