OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN J. McN. RAMSAY. The death occurred recently a! Oamaru of Captain .lames McNicooll Ramsay, at the ape of 7"> years. Ho was well known in Auckland shipping circle*. la plain Ramsay was the second son of the Rev. .lames Ramsav. of Alyth. P erthshire. Scotland, and nt the ago of H years went to sea as an apprentice on the barque Havilah. tradins: to the Far Ea»t. Later lie was in the New York Aniuerp trade. and finally nil ofliocr of the ship Wild Deer, which brought a numl<er of immigrants to New Zealand. <>11 that. trip. ( aptain Pamsay, then second officer, neatly lost hi< life. A boy fell from the rigging while n heavy sea was running, and Captain Ramsay went out in charge of a l»oat to try save the lad. The ljont turned turtle and all but Captain Ramsay and another seaman were drowned. The two were only rescued lour hours after the boat, capsized. I-atcr Captain Ramsay was chief officer of the Wild !>ccr. and also the William Davy, trading to New Zealand. He was next in a steamer trading from England to Rangoon and was afterwards engaged carrying troops to South Africa during the Zulu war.
