! (Before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.) MORE ACCIDENTAL THAN WILFUL. '"Guilty to being under the influence, but- not guilty to the other. It was au accident, owing to the lurch of the tramcar," said Thomas Gallowav Aitken (44). Accused was chargcd with being drunk on a tram car in Jervois Road, and also with committing mischief by wilfully damadn:: a pane of glass, valued at 10/. " The tram conductor stated that Aitken, as he was about to leave the car, lurched as tlie car was taking a bend and fell against the window, smashing it. As he refused to give his name and address, the car was pulled up at the Ponsonby police station and accused was given in charge. Sergeant Calwell thought that the matter was more accidental than wilful. Mr. McKean dismissed the charge of mischief, but on the drunkenness charge imposed a fine of 10/, and ordered Aitken to pay for the broken window, plus 10/ witness' expenses, in default, two days' imprisonment. '•A MOTORIST FROM RIVERHEAD." Constable Scandrett found William Green (50) in possession of a motor cyclist's suit late on Saturday night near the Civic Square, and, suspecting that Green had not obtained it honestly, questioned him. "Oh, I'm a motorist from Riverhead." said Green. However, subsequently he said that he had found the suit of overails.

Green, whom the police said, had manv previous convictions for drunkenness. was sentenced to 14 days in gaol for stealing the suit, while he was also ordered to pay £1 for damage done to a side-car cover, or go to gaol for an additional seven days.

OTHER CHARGES PENDING. "There are numerous other charges pending," stated Chief Detective Cummings when William Henry Raymond Cecil Glover (40) was charged with making a false document—an order for a photographic enlargement, purporting to be signed by James Meikle, and inducing G. E. Stafford to act upon it as if it were genuine. Glover was remanded until March 7. A MAORI REMANDED. Rangi Henry Tulii (32) was remanded until March 5 on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support. In asking for the remand, Chief Detective C'timmings alleged that Tu'ni had been ftting girls and taking them to the Chinese gardens, where Tuhi had been found with three young girls. SENT TO ROTO ROA. "You have six previous convictions since November 12 last for offences arising out of drunkenness, so I think the Island is the only place for you," said the magistrate to Michael Kelly (65), who pleaded guilty to two charges of having procured liquor while prohibited and another of entering licensed premises while prohibited. Kelly's term on Roto Roa Inebriates' Island was fixed by Mr. McKean at 12 months. CHARGE AGAINST A MARINE. A Royal Marine from one of the warships in port, Percy Mulholland (30). who had two good conduct stripes on his left arm. pleaded guilty to having used obscene language in Quay Street. The police alleged that the language was used to a gatekeeper on the wharf. Accused would be dealt with on the charge when he was returned to his ship. This being so. the magistrate merely ordered Mulholland to pay 10/ costs.
