BILLIARD SALOON DAMAGED.
FIRE CAUSED BY CIGARETTE. BRIGADE MAKES GOOD-SAVE. (By Telegraph,—Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, this day. The billiardroom of Mr. J. J. Ryan, in Hautapa Street, suffered considerably by a fire at 11.30 p.m. on Friday. The fire was confined to the corner of the building, but two tables were considerably damaged, as were the walls of the old wooden building. Under the leadership of Lieut. Mortland, the fire brigade did effective work, and the stock in the tobacco shop was saved. The fire originated from a cigarette butt, and ,was due to carelessness. The building was covered by an insurance of £00 with the Standard Company.
