BADCOCK WITHDRAWS.
NEW ZEALAND CRICKET TEAM. RECONSTRUCTION NEEDED. POSSIBILITY 01-} EXTRA MAX. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON", .Sunday. Tho Wellington coach, F, T. Badcock, who was selected for the New Zealand cricket team to tour Britain, has informed the New Zealand Cricket Council that he is unable to make the trip. His decision will necessitate the selection of another player. There is a feeling in local circles that the choice may fall on N. Gallichan, of Palmerston North, who is a left-hand slow medium bowler, and a good batsman and field. It is understood that the advice of Mr. Warwick Armstrong and Mr. Hugh Trumble will be sought as to the advisability of increasing the team for England from 14 to 15 players. The withdrawal of Badcock means that the selectors, Messrs. W. S. Bricc (Wellington), W. Patrick (Christchurch) and F. Williams (Duncdin) will be requested to select a man to fill the vacancy. Should it be decided to send a fifteenth player, the opinion of the selectors will also be taken about whom the extra man will be. Obviously the suggestion from Wellington that Gallichan should go is prompted by the fact that his type of bowling is considered nearest in style to that of Badcock, though, in steadiness and quality, it falls a deal short of Badcock's standard. When Mr.. Brice was . discussing the selection recently, he declared that the choice of fourteenth man lay between Merritt and Bead, of Canterbury. Aucklanders consider that Player, as a medium pace right-hand bowler with swing and off spin, and a Jeft-hand batsman, has prior claims all round on performances to Read.
