TRANSPORT CONTROL.

The influential deputation from local bodies on the northern side of the harbour that waited on the Prime Minister this morning to ask for an independent Transport Board does not seem to have obtained much satisfaction. The arguments put forward by the deputation were partly local and partly general. It is felt on the North Shore that the Auckland City Council, which takes over the licensing functions of the Takapuna Council, is necessarily out of touch with local conditions. The general argument, however, is much the more important. On principle, the present system of control, despite the right of appeal, is unsound, in that the licensing authorities are or may be interested parties. Mr. Coates told the deputation that the Act was the result of careful consideration, and should have a fair trial. Unfortunately there are two opinions about what constitutes careful consideration, and in the opinion of many the granting to interested local bodies of rights over their competitors was wrong in principle from the start, and no experience can make it right.
