CROWDS AT WHARF GATES.

j Enthusiasm remained on a high- ' pitched note till late last night, ami j 5000 people made a dense crowd round i the gates of (Queen's Wharf towards jlO o'clock. Many of those in the crush were people who had been unable to see I the Duke and Duchess of York on Tues- ! day or at the Domain yesterday morning. and they were bent on having at : least a momentary glimpse ol tlieni ' ere they departed for Russell. Hundreds of people waited ai>out from S ' o'clock till fifteen minutes past ten. w iien the Ducal couple passed through the big gates in their car.

The patient crowd was rewarded with a passing view of Their Royal Highnesses. and it gave vent to loud cheers. Passing quickly through the gates tlic car proceeded to the Admiralty steps, and to the accompaniment of sustained cheering the Royal Tisitor« emlarked on their barge, which bore them swiftly to the Renown. Half an-hour later tlu* great battle cruiser weighed anchor and. after the manner of the "Silent Service." steamed quietly down the harbour ami round North Head. Residents nf the trans harbour suburbs watched her from the beaches till her silver-grey bulk was lost in the murk.
