BAND CONTESTS.

! COMPETITION VERY KEEN.; i JUDGE ADMITS DIFFICULTY, j NOTES OX THE PLAYING. j 9 (Hy Te!e;r::p:i. — Owt Corresporijcc'.i ; WELLINGTON, this day. j The Auckland Waterside Worker.* i an.l tlie Hamilt4.il Municipal Mauds t xik • part in the P. grade content of the I Dominion champion-hips ia<t night at j the Town Hall, which was well tille-1. j Seventeen ban.ls took part i:: the first ]'. | grade test miinber, ""The Magic Flute." J Hamilton drew No. 1 to play, ami their j -olid tone and lively movements juu j suited the general brightness of the extracts from Mozart's fine <.lcl ('"nicily opera. The conductor, Mr. T. Nara. had j the hand under splendid control, ami \ though when Judge Hailiwell announ.-od ! the placings it was not found in a lead- | ing position, it pave it* members some satisfaction to learn from the Fngli-h | adjudicator that the playing of the | bauds was fairly even, very little sepa- j rating a number of performers. The j point*, were not disclosed, only placing:* being given. For the individual prizes of the night. it is a coincidence that the two Auckland district band* should tie. for after a smart rendering, which was also characterised by much brightness, the Auckland Watersiders were bracketed with Hamilton. A good deal depend* on the class of performance each Auckland band can present in the second test. "Fia Diavolo," as to whether honours can be gained. No doubt the task will be hard, for this P> grade contest is one of the best ever held in the Dominion. The top band for the night. Dannevirke Municipal, gave a nm*ical performance of excellent standard, and may win the aggregate, but it is going to be pushed very hard by several others. Taranaki has a strong representation. New Plymouth Citizens, placed second, seemed little inferior to Dannevirke. The Fifth Oamaru Mounted?, placed third, gave a more refined performance than any other band, and closely following it were Invercargill Civic (better known to bandsmen a* the old Invercargill Hibernian K Dunedin Tramways. Taranaki Regimental. Stratford Citizens, and Haw-era. Judge Hailiwell commented 4in the. evenness of the playing, and said ! lie had had difficulty in coming to a decision in favour of any one of several leading bands, but the prize for the night had gone to the band showing ' best all-round qualities. i The B grade second test will take I place to-morrow night. To-day the champion cornet solo is being heard, one section in the morning and one in the afternoon. Among the better morning performances were those of .T. Robertson, the Greymouth boy champion, nowplaying for Wanganui Garrison, and F. Rower, Giabornc. To-nignt the A grade bands will play the first test selection. "Lortzing."'
