THE DISFIGURED COUNTRYSIDE.

The Vacuum Oil Company is to be congratulated on a letter it has addressed to the South Island Motor Union, supporting that body in its campaign against advertise ments on .he countryside. The Vacuum Oi! Company announces that "the definite policy of the Company is opposed to the erection oi advertising material in or about rural districts -which wo,.!J tend to disfigure or mar the natural beauties or in any way to spoi' the surroundings," and that definitj instruc tions have been issued that no further advertising of this nature is to be erected. The Company has set an example which we hope will be followed. Within the last few year? several oil companies in England agreed t<> cease using hoardings in country and the decision was hailed as an important victory in the fight for the preservation of the countryside s beauty. In .cw Zealand there is a growing feeling against disfiguring hoardings, especially in the country, but this movement may have to be considerably stronger before it influences some offenders. One of the worst is the Government, which should set the best example.
