DEVIATION ROUTES.

MAXUREWA'S ATTITUDE. Strong criticism of the Auckland Automobile Association's recent complaints in regard to the maintenance of deviation routes, occasioned by the Great SJoutk Koad reconstruction work, was made at the meeting of the j Manurewa Town Board. I The clerk read a lengthy report on the matter prepared fay the Manukau County Council's engineer (Mr. J. E.I Pagei" indicating that the Highways! Beard's additional contribution of £220 j per mile did not make provision for the maintenance of detour routes. In Xjte course of discussion, members of the board took strong exception to | the recently-published comments, made . by the a-raoc.ation, in regard to this | maintenance work. The chairman (Mr. j A. C. A. Sexton) contended that the ) association had no conception whatever of the difficulties which presented them- j selves to the local bodies involved in maintaining: detour roads, in addition to laying down an expensive concrete highway. He considered the motorists* j contribution of £2 per annum to be j totally inadequate, in proportion to the heavy expense incurred by the local bodies concerned, and. incidentally, the ratepayers most intimately affected. The j chairmaa expressed the opinion that the tremendous increase of traffic which may bo expected to follow the completion of the road would probably be more than the locil bodies could bear without further assistance. Jt was decided to communicate with th? as-ociation conveying the board's feelings on the matter.
