Nosworthy, stated yesterday that as far as could be seen the tourist business for the present season would be a great improvement on that of last season. He understood from the statistical departments that up to December 31 the figures showed an increase of 30 per cent in numbers over the same period of the previous season. The actual cash bookings at the Department's bureaus were 10 per cent, greater, and the general revenue of the Department from all sources also showed an upward tendency. r There had been a great number of American and Australian visitors, and the various bureaus had been heavily taxed These facts were verv heartening when it was considered' that la*t season was a record one in the Depart"ent * an n als > P™bably on account of the, Dunedin Exhibition, and showed that the adverting of the Department'* attractions was bearing good fruit. The necessity for increased accommodation at all reports was becoming very evident. The Tourist Department had certainly led the way in largely increasing and bringing up to date their house at Lake Waikaremoana and the hotel at Lake Te Anau. Tenders also had been called and an offer accepted for additions to Waitomo. Taking it all round, the Minister said. the tourist traffic was undoubtedly on the upward grade, and solid revenue to the country could be confidently anticiftted from this source.
