TAKAPUNA RACES.

TRANSFORMER WINS CUP. STEWARDS' TO TEA BELL. FLYING JULIET POORLY SUPPORTED. The summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club opened on Saturday at Duvonport. The weather was fine until the ii f tli race, when a slight

shower fell, lint the rain came down solidly after the sixth event had been decided. There was a large attendance, but many of the patrons did not come prepared fur such a sudden change in the climatic conditions The Cup was won by Mr. D. Twoliill's Transformer, who scored by half a length from Spoony. Flying Juliet won the Zealandia Handicap and returned a handsome double-figure dividend. Green Rides First Winner. King Emerald was the popular pick for the Trial Stakes with which the programme opened, carrying about £180 more than Town Guard, while Cantab also had friends. The public nearly selected them rightly, for King Emerald won and Cantab was third. King Arch and King Emerald were the early leaders, but Cantab supplanted King Emerald before they crossed the top. However, King Em era Id was never far away, aiul taking charge in the straight beat Bold Front by a length and a quarter at the linisli. Cantab was only half a length away third with Abbey Day, Wyoming, Town Guard, Daytaro and | Bright Comet next. Town Guard was j one of the last when the field had gone , a hundred yards, but he later commenced | to move up and was close to the leaders at the entrance to the straight. The race should improve him. Bold Front was about the middle of the field for the greater portion of the distance but finished well in second place.

A Favourite Beaten. Glencairn, Peter Rosa, Hangawera and Waiau Lad were the defections from the Orewa Highweight Handicap. Rangitalii was entrusted with about £620 more than Royalform, while Ngarara was next best backed. Praiseworthy started off at a great pace and going along the straight the first time was well clear of Kamehameha, Ngarara, Dead Sweet and Royalform, who were racing in that order. Along the back the field commenced to close up, but Kamehameha got knocked back. Dead Sweet and Praiseworthy led across the top from Kamehameha and Ngarara, but Dead Sweet and Praiseworthy then retired. Kamehameha and Ngarara came into the straight together attended by Royalform. The last named then took charge and won comfortably by a neck from Kamehameha, who beat Rangitahi by two lengths. Ngarara, Day Bell, Dead Sweet, Glenotus and Sea Comet were next. The favourite should be seen to better advantage before long.

A Surprise. Nineteen paraded for tlie Zealandia Handicap. Scat was £5 better favourite than Archeno, while Tea Bell and Quincoma were next fancied. Flying Juliet, from the extreme outside, soon rushed to the front and stayed there. Along the hack she was attended by Tea Bell, Muscari, Charlady, Areheen and Quincoma. The order was much the same crossing the top. Flying Juliet was first to turn for home from Tea Bell, Jluscari, Quinconia, Charlady and Merry Damon. In a good finish, Flying Juliet beat Tea Bell by a head with Merry Damon three lengths away, third. Charlady, Muscari, Aururuavis, Bahama and Archeno were next. Polonett was very lame when he returned to the paddock. The winner returned a nice price, for she was only twelfth favourite. The Big Event. Quinconia, Princess Bonnie, Royal Mint and Delightment were not saddled up for the Takapuna Cup, but despite this, fifteen went to the post. Desert Glow was entrusted with nearly £350 more than Town Bank, while Edea Hall and Papatu were most sought after of the others. Day Guard was the early leader and as they came past the stands the first time, he was well clear of Papatu, Ru'apapa, Hipo, Eden Hall, Desert Glow and Town Bank. Along the back, Papatu ran up to Day Guard with Ruapapa, Hipo, Desert Glow, Golden Krist, Transformer and Town Bank next. Then matters changed for Golden Krist and Transformre put in a good run on the outside, which landed them in front before the top was reached. Transformer, Eden Hall, Spoony, Town Bank, Day Guard and Golden Krist were most prominent entering the straight. Transformer then drew out to beat Spoony by half a length, while Town Bank was a couple of lengths away, followed by Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Papatu, Transformer, Hipo, Barometer, Golden Krist with Royal Present last. Town Bank got interfered with when going along the straight the first time.

Win for Awarere. Town Guard, who was . making his second appearance to-day, was made favourite for the Ferry Handicap, carrying about £280 more than Awarere, while Macroom was next fancied. When the field settled down, Awarere was in front, attended by Judge's Box. Alonsoa, Macroom, Bizarro, Marble Mount and War Officer, Macroom ran up to Awarere half a mile from home, with Judge's Box, Alonsoa, War Officer and Town Guard racing as named. There was little alteration when the field turned for home and Awarere stayed on long enough to get the decision by a neck from Macroom, which beat War Officer by two lengths. Alonsoa, Marble Mount, Town Guard.; Maveelish and Lady Cintra were nextFlying Tresses Jumps the Rails. The two-year-old event, the Calliope Handicap, saw nine go to the post. The public made Paganelli twice as good n favourite as Exalted, while In theShade was next fancied. Flying Tresses had good support, but before the star' jumped the rails into the centre of the course and cut her stifle, with the result that she had to be withdrawn. The investments were returned. When the harried went up Exalted and Paganeli: were in front, but the latter soon took char.ee, and across the top was attended by Exalted, Auriculus, In The Shade and Segment. Paganelli showed the wav into the straight to In th Shade. Exalted, and Segment, and hi a good : finish In The Shade beat Paganelli by a head. .Speechless was four length's away third, with Exalted, Prince Otto. Segmen , and Auriculus finishing in that order. The winner is an Australian bun gelding, and was purchased bv J. T.

Mamieson at the Sydney yearling sales j last April. This is liis first success, i He was ridden by the owner's apprentice, W. Bryce, who had his first win- I ning ride. 1 A Little-Fancied One. j Rahepoto was the only scratching for the Hauraki Hack Handicap. The public went for Wenday, with Antrim j Boy and Ngarara most fancied. Hanga- i wera ied past the stand from Antrim ] Boy, Ngarara, Arch Queen and Wenday. Antrim Boy ran to the front, going along the back, but a little later Wenday headed him, the pair being attended by Clockwork and Hangawera. Wenday j was first to turn for home from Hanga- | were, Kamehanieha and Te Koroke. In j another fine finish, Hangawera got the ; verdict by a head. Te Koroke was two ! and a-half lengths away, followed by ! Kamehanieha, Arch Queen, Ngarara and ' Clockwork. j Tea Bell at Second Start. j Cawnpore, Archeen and Aurumavie j were the for the Stewards' Handicap with which the programme concluded. Tea Bell £1349, King Merv £1003 [ and Pelliam £051) were most fancied. King 1 -Merv and Dan Quiii were the early I leaders, but Chairman then took charge ; from Oration, King Merv, Dan Quin, Ned Kelly and Tea Bell. Across the top Oration went to the front with Dan Quin, Ned Kelly, Chairman and King Merv. I Ned Kelly was the finst to turn for home j Irom Oration, Dan Quin, Serang and Tea ; Bell. Tea Bell then drew out to win by half a length from Ned Kelly who beat Serang by two lengths. Chairman was fourth, followed by Dan Quiii, Pelliam, York Abbev and Oration.
