THE END OF THE HOLIDAY.
MILES FROM ANYWHERE. A NIGHT ON THE ROAD. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTC'HURCH, this day. With their car broken down and not knowing how far they were from the nearest settlement, the Mayor of Lvttelton (Mr. F. E. Sutton) and Mrs. Sutton and their family of four children had to spend Saturday night on the road, when tliey were returning from a motor tour in the North Island, via Nelson. When Mr. Sutton was driving up a hill at 6.30 on Saturday night, the engine of the car stopped through an electrical fault which could not be traced. At that time he was about seventeen miles on the other side of Parnassus, but as he was not acquainted with the district he did not know how far he was from the nearest settlement. The four children were put to sleep in the rear of the car. At four o'clock on Sunday morning, Mr. Sutton set out to walk for assistance, and at six o'clock he arrived at Mr. J. F. MacFarlane's residence. Mr. MacFarlane drove the party to Parnassus, and assistance was obtained from Cheviot to repair the car. Finally Mr. and Mrs. Sutton and their children got back to Lyttelton last night, instead of arriving home early on Sunday, as they anticipated.
