A COMFORTABLE WIN.

New Zealand League Team. DEFEAT OF CUMBERLAND. LONDON, January 9.

The New Zealand League footballers yesterday defeated Cumberland at Workington by 18 points to 3. The weather was cold and wet. There were 3000 spectators. The visitors' team comprised: Kirwan, Brown, Davidson, Cole, Desmond, Brisbane, Hall, Menziea, Thomas, Herring, Gardiner, Mason and Avery. In the first half Cumberland played with a strong wind in their favour, but they were only dangerous with their forward rushes. The visitors first mastered the forward movements and then assumed the offensive. It mattered little if they were beaten in the scrums. They passed the ball at every opportunity and the quickness of their attacks bewildered Cumberland. The latter were penalised during a hot attack and Gardiner kicked a goal. Soon Hall with a fine run scored a try which Gardiner converted. ' Excellent passing resulted in Davidson scoring and Gardiner again converted. Gardiner scored the next try, but failed to add the major points. In the second half the New Zealanders were less conspicuous. Though they had the advantage of the wind they seemed to lack condition. Desmond scored a try. Then Thornburrow scored Cumberland's only try.
