sir william McMillan. SYDNEY, December 21. The death is announced of Sir William McMillan, aged 77 years.

Sir William McMillan, who was created a K.C.M.G. in 1901, was the son of a Wesleyan Minister, and was born in Londonderry. After being educated at Wesley College, Dublin, he went to Australia in 1869, and became a partner in the firm of W. and A. McArthur, Ltd. After entering politics and becoming Colonial Treasurer in the Parkes Government in 1889, Sir William was a member of the Convention which framed the Commonwealth Constitution in 1897. He was Deputy-Leader of the Free Trade party in the House and led the party throughout most of the discussion on the much-debated Tariff Bill. DR. HUGH CAMPBELL ROSS. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LOXDOX, December 21. The death lias occurred of Dr. Hugh Campbell Ross, Director of the McFadden Research Fund, aboard the Xarkunda, off Aden. Tbe McFadden Research Foundation is connected with the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, Chelsea, England. Dr. Ross has been its director since 1910. Dr. Ross was born in 1575, the son of Sir Campbell Ross, and was educated at Isle of Wight College. He qualified as a doctor in 189 S. after which he travelled in Egypt and China. He served as a surgeon in the South African war, and then was a surgeon in the Royal Xavy, where he devised new methods of microscopical study of living human cells. In 1906 he was appointed medical officer of health at Cairo, and started mosquito extermination there under Lord Cromer's administration. After his appointment as Director of the McFadden Research Fund, Dr. Ross developed new methods of cancer research, and conducted the research for the Home Office on industrial cancer and on miners' phthisis. He also invented an ultraviolet process for the prevention of industrial cancer. Dr. Ross was the author of numerous jiapers and publications dealing with medical research, particularly in regard to cell formation and cancer.
