EVE STEALS AN APPLE.
AND DISCOVERS A DIAMOND. FINDING OF GRANDE CONDE. PARIS, December 21. I A romantic story is revealed surrounding the discovery of the stolen Grande Conde diamond. It 's reported that Kauffer and Sonter, the two Alsatians who stole the jewels, were staying at a small hotel. i A chambermaid was dusting the bedroom occupied by the two men when she noticed an apple on the mantelpiece. She was hungry, so she decided to eat it, and presently her teeth came in contact with a hard substance, which proved to be the diamond. The police were called in and recovered the jewel. Kauffer had been absent from the room all night and the landlady, becoming I suspicious, searched his valise. An apple fell out and it was placed on the mantelpiece. When Kauffer returned he walked into the arms of a detective. He immediately made a full confession. A further arrest has been made in connection with the robbery, Madame de Courtry having been taken into custody. When apprehended she was wearing valuable furs and had £150 in her possession. HOPE ABANDONED. (Received 12 noon.) PARIS, December 21. The police have abandoned hope of sorting out the Chantilly settings from jewellers' stocks. The principal stone, apart from the Conde diamond, was sold separately and promptly resold to an Argentinian.
