AMAZING SCENES.
SMETHWICK BY-ELECTION. NOTHING LIKE IT IN HISTORY. LONDON, December 21. The amazing scenes which have characterised the Smethwick by-election and which are stated by some authorities to be unprecedented in the history of politics in England, will close to-day -when polling takes place. Further demonstrations are expected when the result is declared. The Liberal candidate has been almost forgotten, but he claims that the result will be a surprise. Mr. Marshall Pike, the Conservative candidate, says he has had little oppor-, tunity for speaking on constructive politics as his meetings have been broken up again and again by deliberate Socialist rowdyism.
Mis* Betty Baldwin. Mr. Oliver Baldwin. The final meeting arranged by Mr. Pike was abandoned owing to disorder, the candidate and others not bejng permitted to speak. Mr. Oswald Mosley, the Labour candidate, asks for a majority that will shake the kingdom to its foundation. All parties held numerous meetings yesterday, the gatherings being most lively. The Socialist son of the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, spoke on behalf of Mr. Mosley, while Mr. Baldwin's daughter will to-day drive Mr. Pike's motor car around the constituency.
