WHANGAREI PROJECT.
SUGGESTED CIVIC SQUARE (Bj Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.! WHAJS T GAREI, this day. The Whangarei Borough Council has appointed a special committee, consisting of the Mayor, Mr..W. Timewell, and Sir. A. T.Bi-ainsby, to consider suitable s Ues for the establishment of a civic square in Whangarei, and "to report at a future meeting. . . The Mayor, in proposing the inrestigatiojn, said that it ' was considered a desirable provision ' that eveiy town should have a gathering place somewhere in an open space, round which the principle buildings would gravitate. In Whangarei the first place that one would think of as. suitable .would" be on Harrison's Flat, between Bank Street and Eathbone or James Street. There -were other suitable areas, further away on the flat and in the vicinity of Walton" Street or the Triangle. It was explained by Mr. R. S. Finch that owners having frontages to a civic square would have ■to pay at least 50 per cent of thfe cost of betterment.
