SWIMMING.
WAITEMATA CLUB'S GALA. FINE PROGRAMME STAGED. Animated and kaleidoscopic was the scene at the Tepid Baths last night, when a very successful gala was staged by the Waitemata Swimming Club. The pool reflected the brilliant lighting, and the record attendance, grouped at points of vantage round the sides of the building, had the pleasure of witnessing a diversified programme which was full of thrills and interest throughout. The big race of the evening, the 440 yards handicap, was won by J. Enwright. He swam a great race, and with a strong steady stroke held the winning position throughout from E. C. Cunnold, who was placed second. Great interest centred in the ladies' 220 yards handicap, with Miss Piri Page on the scratch mark, giving away 6 seconds to Miss J. Bell and 10 seconds to Miss Champion. Miss Bell overhauled Miss Champion early in the race, and maintained her lead from Miss Page. With a length and a-half to go the latter, amid excitement, spurted, but her effort was left too late, and Miss Bell won by about four yards. The concluding event of the evening was a water polo match between Mount Eden and Waitemata A, refereed by Mr. G. Thorpe. The latter had an easy win. It was a pity that some unfair tactics were introduced into the game, and it marred what would otherwise have>;been a spectacular contest. The referee found it necessary to "order out" one of the contestants; .. - Results f— Tiny Tots (Boys). 33 1-3 Yards.—G. Coleman (2s) 1, Ay Tylecoate (3s) 2, T. Day (3s) 3. Time, 13e.
