ABUSES IN TRADING.
NEW REGULATIONS DRAFTED. SALE OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES: (By Telfgrap'h.— Special to "Star.') . WELLINGTON, this day. An important decision, having the protection of the public as its object, has been reached by Cabinet in respect to the sale of fruit and vegetables. Most people are familiar with the box of strawberries which appears to be full of fruit, but which often has more than a sufficient amount of packing in the form of cabbage leaves or straw, and with the "sack" of potatoes which contains any given quantity of earth at the bottom to make up the weight. For a lorfg time past complaints of these and similar unscrupulous methods of trading have been made to the Government, and the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. O. J. Hawken) has resolved that regulations are. necessary to safeguard the public. The Minister has therefore had an Order-in-Council drafted lo "prevent abuses in the packing of fruit and vegetables for sale,., and it is expected ; that the new regulations will be gazetted this week. "It is all a matter of fair trading," remarked Mr. Hawken in the course of a reference to. the matter.
