HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS SHIELD* YESTERDAY'S PLAY. AUCKLAND GRAMMAR MAKES 182.' ! A match for the Heathcote Williams Shield was commenced at Eden Pi- ar- | yesterday afternoon between Auckland j Grammar School (holders) and Christ j church Boys' High School (challengers!* Although a little rain fell earlier in th« day. and the bowlers had to use sawdust at the start, the wicket was in excel lent order, and in favour of the batsmen, lacking sufficient "life" to enabte the bowlers to get the most out of it. Auckland Grammar had first use 'of the wicket, and were all out for tlia good total of 182. Sutherland, a specta, cular batsman, and Chapman opened the Grammar School's innings to the bowline, of Patrick, a son of the New Zealand Test match captain, and Esnott, a slow-left-hand break bowler. Patrick p u fc plenty of pace into his deliveries, but he would have been more effective had ha shortened his length, instead of con. sistently over-pitching the ball. Sutherland and Chapman gave the shield holders a useful start before Chap, man was caught and bowled by Escott with 12 runs to his credit. Partnered' by Whitelaw, Sutherland continued to play confidently and well, but with the score at 47 Whitelaw was splendidly caught by Harper at point. Two more wickets fell in quick succession, and although Schnauer, the captain, and Eraser temporarily stopped the rot, Fraser lost his wicket just before the tea adjournment. Five wickets were down for 89 when Schnauer and Cashmore resumed batting. Both batsmen proceeded to open out in good style on the bowling, and, despite frequent changes, the score went mounting well past the century mark. Cashmore was eventually bowled by Grose after a most valuable innings, which was marked by .vigorous driving and good leg shots. The remaining batsmen did not last long, the innings closing for IS2. Schnauer' was unbeaten at the close of the innings with 56 rung to his credit. He played°a real captain's innings, his score being made when" the runs were most wanted. Ha drove with great power, and gqt several nice shots away in slips. There was just under an hour left t<» play when Thorne and limes opened Christchurch's first innings. Batting soundly and well, the opening pair defied all efforts to dislodge them, and had taken the score to 39 wheu stumps were drawn for the day.
