STABLE AND TRACK GOSSIP. * i (By WHALEBOXK.) December 27—WaipnUnraii J.C. Ilecember 27. 2a — Westland R.C. liecemb'T 27, 2b— Taranaki J.C. December 27, 28—Dunedin J.C [ December 27. 28. 30—Manawatu R.C. lie,:. Ml, January '~ 4 — Greymouth J.C. Dr..-. 27, 29, January 1, ii—Auckland R.C. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. ED. (Auckland I.—Scion was bracketed with l.oyal Box in both cups. Diogenes was expected to arrive from the South this morning. Highway was given long work on X*o. 3 gia.-s track at Ellens.ie this morning and strode out nicely. Jle is engaged iv hurdle events at tho forthcoming meeting and may makp his presence felt. Te Kara was worked in company with Fapatu on the course proper at Ellerslie this morning, but the big fellow- was not after time, his rider being content to let him run along. He looks pretty well. Battlement was worked in company with Town Bank over a round at Ellerslie this morning, and though the time was not as good as some of the other efforts over a similar distance he moved freely enough. Ballymoy appears to be going along all right in her work at Ellerslie and she went nicely over six furlongs this morning. She is in tho Railway Handicap with the minimum. She has started three times this season for one win. Clarinda ran a good race in the New Zealand Cup and in the Auckland Cup she is in at the minimum. This morning she finished in front of HMask and Piuthair over a round of the course proper and was going very nicely at the finish. Commendation and Lysander are engaged in the King's Plate on the second day of the Auckland meeting and they will be able to have their Avondale Guineas battle over again. There are several other useful ones engaged in the same event. i When galloping on the course proper at Ellerslie this morning White Bird's saddle slipped and she lost her rider. The boy made a game effort to hang on to the reins, but was eventually forced to release his grip after the horse had gone some distance. Tanudees was sent over a round of the tan at Ellerslie this morning in com' pany with Lomint, the pair finishing on terms. He has shown to advantage in his efforts this season, and even if he does not annex the big event he may be prominent before the fixture concludes. C'hamour went well over seven furlongs at Ellerslie this morning. He is among those engaged in the Christmas Handicap and with 7.4 may be prominent at the finish. He has not been further back than fourth this season in five starts, . while he has won three events. ; '? Loma Doon contracted a Cold; and that was the reason for-her withdrawal from all events at the Auckland Racing CluVs summer meeting. This'is a great pity, for on Takapuna form she Jooked as though she would be very hard to dispose of in two-year-old events at Ellerslie next week. The Thorn usually races well at Ellerslie and by the* way he skipped over four furlongs with* Lysander at Ellerslie this morning he should be in the limelight before the meeting eonrludes. He has a couple of engagements on the first day—the Christmas Handicap and the Railway Handicap. Windbag is again an inmate of G. Price's stable, and, with the leg that caused his temporary retirement looking clean, his prospects of standing a preparation for the autumn are bright. HHe was to reappear on the Randwiek tracks last week, as was Royal Tea. who has been spelling at his trainer's stables since he raced in the spring. - Ruanui won at his first start when brought to Auckland for the spring meeting, but he was subsequently bpaten into second place by Silvermine in a Nursery Handicap at Feilding. Ruanui ia one of F. Tilley's team for the A.R.C. summer meeting, and he went very well over half a mile at Ellerslie this morning. He is worth keeping in mind. HMalidane was given n round on the course proper at Ellerslie this morning and accomplished it in 2.3. She does not like heavy going and that had a great deal to do with her being beaten in the HMitchelson Cup when last brought north. If the ground is firm for the forthcoming meeting Mandane. even if she is not successful in the Cup, should be in the money in some of the shorter distance events. The New Zealand jockey, HM. MeCarten, accepted a good offer to ride at the Perth Cup meeting. HHe had arranged to do some riding for a couple of Sydney trainers at the coming meeting a.t Randwiek, and, if they had so wished, would have turned down the Perth offer. They intimated they had no wish to stand in his way. and HMcCarten was consequently free to take a trip to the Western State. If Battlement is as good as when racing in Sydney, he has been given an'excellent chance of success in the Auckland Cup with 7.2—71b less than weight for age (says the Sydney "Referee.") In the Waverley Handicap." he made a mile and three-quarters record for Randwiek of 3..-.0, and carried fi.ll. With only 51b more be should take no end of beating at Auckland, unless the Dominion's pts are much better than ours, and that is not suggested by the success of Count Cavour in the New Zealand Cup. Rapinp put up a good performance at Ellerslie this morning, when he went a round outside three trestles on tbe course proper in 2.1. He started off by himself and was picked up at the spven-fnrlong post by Star Stranger, and he finished his task well. Rapine won the Auckland Cup last year with 9.H. and he has only lib more this time. He has only got to go on the right way to be very difficult to dispose of. Star Stranger also moved well, the last seven furlongs of the round being covered in 1.33, which wa* a good effort.

Limited is one of those fancied for the Railway Handicap, and he ran five furlongs well at Ellerslie this morning. The brother to Absurdum has some pace. Princess Ronnie won well at the Takapuna meeting and she has gone on tbe right way since then. Thits morning she went over seven furlongs nicely and with S.:i -I_p will have some friends in the Christmas Handicap if started. Grand Knight bears a bright appearance, and despite his weight this horse may run a good race if started in the Railway Handicap. When lie won the Easter Handicap, seven furlongs, at Christehurch he had !>..'! and lib more when he annexed the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half on the second day. lie is in the King's Plate and the Summer Cup on the second day, the Auckland Racing Club Handicap and the Newmar- . ket Handicap on the third day and the : Grandstand Handicap and the Clifford Plate on the concluding day. : ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. RAPINE PERFORMS WELL. Early this morning- rain set in, but it cleared off about daylight. However, it commenced ag-ain shortly arter training- work started and continued practically throughout. It was much needed, and would do little harm to the tracks. The course proper, outside three trestles was open Tor fast work and there were some interesting: gallops. THE COI'RSE PROPER.
