RAILWAY ADVISORY BOARDS, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. 1 (By Telesraph.—Special to "st_r.T \ WELLINGTON, this day. Provision by the Railway Depart___l of financial assistance to the rece__j" inaugurated Railway Advisory Boardf was not contemplated by the Pr__t Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates): when he formulated the scheme, -_se_ aims at furnishing a common meeting ground between the users of the raibxayl and the Department for the better understanding of railway problems. _B« Coates was understood io hold the Tie* that, since firmly established bodies, such as chambers of commerce, .were likely to be the prime movers hi t_* matter of organisation, the costs in ——— direction would be negligible, and i_sni would be no occasion for the State to supply funds on that score. Another consideration—and this was indicated n the circular outl:nir._ the proposed constitution of the boards—wa; that -th* users of the national transport system would distinctly benefit by the estaK-si-ment of the scheme. One of the feature; of tbe existeM" of the advisory boards ;; the opportunity provided of co-ordinat:n_ complaints _na suggested improvemerjt s. With _t_« Dominion divided into four distn--» these can be forwarded to the central depot in the district concerned; and t_9 wide areas each board is asked to cover give a clear official bin: that, as far S> representation of provincial interests is concerned, it should be done by memorandum, as against personal attend-- 3 of delegates. If representatives '' erß to attend the board'from distant a"** in the district, the question of free nar way passes would probably arise, -» from what can be ascertained -here is- 0 likelihood of that concession being «-; tended to delegates. At a meeting If- 5 week in connection with tbe fon__naj of a board for the railway district ?&& of Ohakune. h wa; decided to !__»§*•*■ to raise a levy, presided that the Ea* wav Departme'ni co-o**rated by grail-- 1 -* a £ for £ subsidy. While the Kail**? Board, when approached on S_nSO*?j was not prepared to comment on ~. t resolution, there is reason to beliere.i***** the possibility of the subsidy ?«P°f~ by the Northern Advisory Board &»* granted is extremely remote.
