RADIO FOG SIGNALS.
I CAPE MARIA BEACON. I HOW IT WILL WORK. The installation of the 1000-inetra wave-length radio beacon oil' Cape Maria. Van Dienien has now been completed, and it will operate as a radio fog-signal for the use of shipping as from December 1, whenever weather causing low visibility exists at the Cape or in the locality lof Three Kings Islands. The signal will ; be transmitted automatically at a speed of 15 words per minute for two minutes, followed by an interval of three minutes' silence. Any vessel requiring the radio. ; beacon to operate for the "purpose of obtaining a line of position should com i municate by radio with Awanui or Auckland radio stations, upon receipt of w iii'-h the radio station will immediately instruct Cape Maria. The beacon's fnjjsignais will then be automatically transmitted for thirty minute-. A charge of 2/ against the vessel requesting ihe vice will be made by the Po-t. a id Tiegraph Department. The radio ln-a--oii .does not exchange wireless signals vthh .ships. Masters of vessels intercepting '. the fog-signal are requested to fonvatd ■ reports as to the signal's effectivene-s, 'and particularly as to the details of the j bearings and distances at which oh-ewa- ' lions were made, to the Secretary "I the Marine Department.
