DR. J. GIBBS' MISSION.
TO RAISE £10,000.
FOR PRESBYTERIAN BURSARIES,
A visitor to the sitting of the. A uck " land Presbytery last evening, was %he Rev. Dr. J. Gibb, of Wellington, who is at present in Auckland in connection with his mission, to raise £10,000 for the purpose of providing bursaries for students .at the Presbyterian Theological Hall. In welcoming Dr. Gibb, the Moderator, Rev. J. Lamb Harvey, 'said it was characteristic of that gentleman that, having nominally retired, he was now engaged in a strenuous effort for the welfare of the Church he had served so long. Dr. Gibb said he was on a begging expedition: The need for more ministers in their Church was evident, seeing that there were, at the preaent time, 40 vacant charges in New Zealand. That was a perilous condition for their Church to be in. The difficulty was, that for a student to be properly fitted for the ministry, including taking his degrees, meant waiting seven or eight years. There was no profession or' trade that required such a long apprenticeship. He had only been in Auckland a week, but was glad to report that from three of what might fairly be termed the smaller churches, the amount raised was £450, which he considered very satisfactory. He thought it safe to say that already about £7000 was'fn sight. In conclusion,' Dr. Gibb paid a tribute to the self-denial of men who went into the ministry, for, of them, it could truly be said, they did not go into it for what could be go out of it. Thanks were accorded Dr. Gibb on the i motion of Rev. D. D. Scott.
