TRAWLING IN THE GULF.
USE OF SEINE NETS. PROTEST BY ACCLIMATISATION " SOCIETY. "Fifteen or twenty years ago there were plenty of fish in the harbour and gulf, but that was before the day of the trawlers and the Seine nets," said the president (Mr. C. A. Whitney) at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society last evening, when a letter was. received urging that a meeting should be held at the Town Hall to protest against the regulations regarding trawling in the gulf which weTe recently gazetted. It was said that any action taken would be supported by the Thames and Whangarei fishermen.
The president said that it was now impossible for anyone to get any good line fishing close to Auckland unless they Bad a pet epot, whereas in the old days steamers would take fishing parties down to near Rangitoto, where a big swag of schnapper could be caught. He considered that there was no doubt that the trawling had done tremendous damage. A Member: It is a matter that should be brought before the notice of the Government. It was further decided to have a protest prepared in the form of a report, and to further discuss the matter at the December meeting.
