WATER STILL LOWER. IMPROVED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MERCER, this day.
Motor lorries are now passing freely along the flooded road under their own power. At noon to-day the depth of water at the lowest section of the highway in the vicinity of the railway station was 2ft 6in, and the flood should have receded. another three or four inches by to-morrow. Though many cars with careful driving should, then be able to traverse the road unaided, the use of horeea is advised for the next few days to prevent a breakdown. An unfavourable change in the weather occurred last night, rain falling steadily for several hours, and there is a possibility that sufficient has fallen in the Waikato basin to affect the fiver to some extent during the next day or so.
Barges are still plying between Huntly and Maungatawhiri Stream, below Mercer.
