Rapine and Star Stranger have been sent on from Wellington to Riccarton. They are to have an easy time for a day or two, and*they will then pjiumcnce their, preparation for the New Zealand Cup meeting.

According to reporte from Napier Beacon Light, who was under a cloud a few days back, galloped a good ten furlonge at Napier Park on Tuesday morning, which would make it appear that the ailment has disappeared.

H. Neagle, who trains for Mr. W. G. Stead, has taken High Pitch, Laity, Cosmetic, Welkene, Imitation and Cimabue to Trentham. H. Hickey hae Epistle, Olympic, Royal Damon and Merry Mint competing at the Wellington meeting.

The two-year-olde Agrion and Eulalie, who were taken to Sydney by R. J. Masen, and recently returns! to Riccarton, have eince been confined to easy work. They ehould both be in jroocl fettle by the time they are required t> race at the New Zealand Cup meeting next month. : '

Mr. J. S. McLeod hae decided to treat Ganymede and Torquil to a let-up for a time. The.other members of his team, Beth and■ Bory. OVIor, .who, up to quite in conjunction with Torquil and Ganymede, were under the tuition of W. Donovan, have been handed over to V. H.'Cdlelloytaking up their location in the early, the week at his establiehment- tit Hastings.

Money Order- hae been an-unlucky horse throughout hie xtfeing. career, and it is particularly unfortunate for his connections that he ehould'contract thie trouble at a time when he looked -certain to win come good states." ••■■■•

■ The.' imported -mare Glentruin continues: to get through ■.useful' taske in preparation - fpr-, , spring-, 'engagements (isays "Argue. , ') She. hae not done a great-deal of fast work/but T. H. Gillett should'haye her in goodorder very soon. She ehould be at her best by the end of next month-.for, the Feilding meeting, where .she.may meet the crack Wanganui th'ree r Lysander. Glentruin hae retained.: her rform wonderfully, but she may not laet much longer.

The two-year-olds did not include a Rampion, a fact recognised by the ownertrainer of the i Breeders' Plate winner, Beckwith (says : the "Sydney Refereee"). He did not think that gelding gooo. enough to take south for the Maribyrnong Plate, in which he had' a 101b' penalty. Beckwith had a more seasoned appearance than most of his opponents, and it would have been impossible foi him to get a better rim. As he_ is a long, loose fellow, he may go on improving, but at present he is not much in advance of the shapely Violian, another not for Melbourne. Avant Courier and Agrion just ran fairly in the Breeders' Plate, and the last may have been seen of the former until the autumn. There is no doubt as to his pace, and later he may live'up to his yearling price. In his work Agrion never showed as much pace as Eulalie, but K. J. Mason thought him a much better stayer. This shows that even the most wideawake trainers can err, as Agrion had nothing to do with the finish of his race, while it was her ability to run out the five furlongs that enabled Eulalie to win the Gimcrack Stakes from an almost impossible position at the home turn.

Limerick was' the only three-year-old to oppose the_ older horses at w.f.a., and as in the Craven Plate he proved himself quite up to the standard of our best, il must be the same with Rampion, his Derby conqueror (retnarks a Sydney writer). , Limerick's foot was so much better than in the Derby that he was able to start in the Craven Plate without a bar shoe, and he now appears quite sound. Although he has improved in appearance since he arrived from New Zealand, the suggestion of legginess and lathiness is still there. Nest year he may'have developed in every way; but he scarcely looks as well up to Derby weight as Rampion, a stronger and more compactly buiilt horse. At the same time, Rampion is going to lot of trouble with Limerick in the Derby, and the Melbourne Cup scale should help the latter, even if the Messrs O Bnen s colt beats him in the three-year-old race. It is for that reaeon, in conjunction with the fact that he has shown himself as good as Windbag on w.f.a. terms at a mile and a quarter, that Limerick is now a popular Melbourne Cup pick. In the Melbourne Cup, Windbag would have met Limerick 61b worse than weight-for-age.

Star Stranger's only w.f.a. run at the A.J.C meeting (saj's ' - Pilot") was in the Sprinor Stakes, and, though unplaced m that, he got home ahead of his stable companion, Rapine. The latter ran well in the Randwick Plate, but, as. in the Spring Stakes, finished behind Pantheon. At w.f.a. I should take the improving Star Stranger to now be superior to Rapine, and though a little while back I read in a Wellington paper that the latter was favourite for the New Zealand Cup, his prospects of giving his stable companion 61b are not bright. J. H. Jeflerd had Rapine in great trim at Randwick, but he is not quite good enough now to win w.f.a. races in Sydney.

When Windbag was being hosed after the Craven Plate at the A.J.C. meeting, G. Price was highly pleased with the condition of his legs. Next day there, was a different tale to tell. There was heat in the joint of Windbag's near foreleg, and it rilled slightly. On Friday it was decided not to run him in the Randwink Plate, and, after veterinary examination on Sunday, the final decision was (hat he should be withdrawn from all his Victorian engagements. This was done at 11.10 a.m. on October 11. . He did not show lameness, but his owner did not wish to take the risk of a breakdown, which might have been the result of persevering with him. He preferred to lose what he had invested on him for the Melbourne Cup, and' was wise. The trouble is in the same leg G. Price has feared for some time, but is not located where lie anticipated—just below the knee. For the next two months Windbag will be spelled in a paddock at Messrs. Inglis and Son's Newmarket stables, Randwick, and then, if all goes well, he will again be trained.—("Referee.")

The Wellington Racing Club spring meeting will open to-morrow, and in view of the New Zealand Cup meeting and the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting which follow, the form displayed at Trentham should be of more than average interest. Proceedings will commence with the First Hurdle Handicap, in which Koauau is top weight. Last season he performed well over the battens. Black Cruiser was second in the Winter Hurdles at Wellington, and occupied a similar position in the Sydenham Hurdles at Riccarton with 10.8, and Santiago dead-heated with Enare in a hurdle event at Wanganui. Many Colours will ba making his first appearance this season, but last season he raced well over hurdles. Maunga was third in the Grand National Hurdle Race,, while Uleaborgr has started on three occasions this seai: son for two wins and a second. He was second in the Trial Hurdle race at Riccarton last August, and won the Styx Hurdle Race at the same fixture, and at Geraldine recently he scored again. Hokioi may be the best of the others. Probably Black Cruiser, Uleaborg and Hokioi may be most in demand. In the Taita Handicap Laughing Prince raced well at Kllcrslie, while Merry Mint won at the Dannevirke meeting. Lady Orby ran second in a Nursery Handicap at Napier Park, and won a similar event at Hawke's Bay. Marsurd ran second and Royal Lineage third to Talliskeriiin the Prince of Wales Stakes at Napi&, and Ti-tree; who has only started twibje. was. third, to Laughing -Pirince.' - i&ffl Chelone in the Nursery\,Handicap at The Avondale meeting... .probably. Laughing Prince, Ti-tree, and Lady"Ofby may be most in request. In the Wainui Handicap Phaola, Beaumont, and Hipoi may be the public fancies. , : A •■• goodvield is engaged in the Rimutaka Handicap, and on recent performances ■ Royal Mint, Rascal, and Kilperon may carry most money. A small field will, probably go to the post in the Wellington-Handicap. Degage is a useful mare, and if-started with 0.0 she should give a good/ account of herself. Beacon Light has only started twice this season, for two wins, including the Avondale Cup. Desert Glow was second to Te Monanui in the Plumpton Handicap at the Avondale meeting, while Indian Sage won easily in the mud at Otaki. Clarinda annexed the Park Stakes, one mile and a quarter, at the last Napier meeting, and Nippy has performed well since he has been racing, winning up to a mile and three furlongs. Vaward, who won the Spring Handicap one mile and a quarter, at the Hawke's Bay meeting, and Mah Jong may be the best of the others. Probably Indian Sage, Nippy and Beacon Light may be most in demand. In "the Wellesley Stakes Tallisker and High Finance are sure to command most attention, while Frenzied Finance may be next best backed. In the Shorts Handicap Grand Knight has only got to be at his best to stand a chance, but probably the public will select Le Choucas or Tea Bell' and Mireusonta in preference to.the Englishbred horse. In the October Handicap Ballymoy .Black Duke, and Royal Game may be the favourite division.
