ALLEGED BREACHES AT ROTORUA.
(By Teiegrapn.—Own Correspondent)
ROTORUA, this day.
In the Magistrate's Court two Maoris named Henare Amotawa and Thomson Paul pleaded not guilty to a charge of taking liquor into a Maori village. Senior Sergeant Quinn alleged that he caught the men at the bridge at Whakarewarewa, with a demijohn of beer.
Mr. Davys, for the defence, contended that Whakarewarewa was not gazetted as a Maori village. The barman at the Geyser Hotel said that he sold the beer to a pakeha. The magistrate reserved his decision.
H. Lloyd (Mr. Roe), licensee of the Lake House Hotel, pleaded not guilty to charges (1) of selling liquor after hours, (2) of exposure of liquor for sale, and (3) of keeping open after hours.
Senior Sergeant Quinn deposed that he found three men drinking about 9 o'clock on the night of September 14. Mr. Roe explained that one man was a boarder of whose bona fides the sergeant was satisfied, the other two being his friends.
The magistrate remarked that there was no evidence of exposure, nor of keeping open for sale. These charges would be dismissed, but he reserved decision on the charge of selling liquor after hours, in order to look into the question of whether the two men implicated could be termed personal friends of the boarder.
The two friends of the boarder pleaded guilty to being on licensed premises when the same were required by law to be closed, and the magistrate intimated that he would pronounce judgment in. their case later on.
