COUNCIL ASKED TO PURCHASE.

| Since the Royal Motor Bus Company notified the City Council on .Tuesday-of its intention to cease operations at midnight on October 26, three motor bus companies and three private individuals jwho are running buses in Auckland have given formal notice to the town clerk requiring the City Council to take over ; their buses and plant in terms of the ' Act. ] The Motor Omnibus Traffic Act will come into operation on November 1. The 1 regulations under the Act are expected ', to he issued at any time; and from .November 1 all buses will be required to have a certificate from an inspecting engineer, who is to be appointed by the 'Minister. ! As to the notices which had been given, the Mayor said to-day that about ')0 buses were affected. The matter was before the council in committee, and the fleets were being valued by experts. There had been no concerted action on ! the part of the proprietors, each company or private owner having acted individually. The council did not anticipate any trouble when the Act came into j operation, and was taking the necessary j steps to have the services continued. J Negotiations for purchase were in pro- ; gress with the Royal Motor Bus Com- . pany, which had asked £29,675 for its • fleet of 28 buses, and the plant and .equipment was being valued by the coun- • i cil's olKcers. There would be no break in the services, explained the Mayor, and the public could be assured that the council would take over the Royal buses and . handle the traffic from next Wednesday morning.
