A BANKRUPT DRESSMAKER.
HAS QUARREL WITH A FRIEND. WHO ADVANCED HER MONEY. In a statement showing £604 owing to unsecured creditors and a contingent liability of £342 in a dressmaking partnership, Mabel Lawrence was the bankrupt whose creditors met at the Official Assignee's office this morning. Against the liabilities the assets were set out as nil. The bankrupt was not present, being ill in hospital, but in a statement drawn up by her solicitor (Mr. Goulding) it was mentioned that bankrupt started a dressmaking business in July, 1924. At that time she had no capital, but borrowed £75 from a friend, and opened the business at premises in Brunswick Buildings. At first she did very well, and the friend advanced further moneys. However, they quarrelled and the friend got her to sign a promissory note for £130. Later, the friend got judgment against her. After the judgment was obtainel she took in a partner, but the partnership was later dissolved, and business became bad. She eventually sold out for £190, which money she used I in paying off some of her liabilities. Had it not been for the judgment obtained against her and the troubles which resulted from it, she thought she would have done all right. As the bankrupt was not present and her solicitor said he could not take the matter further than the statement, it was decided to adjourn the meeting sine die.
