PROTECTION OP TIMBER.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —A remark made recently by one of the gentlemen addressing the Hon. Minister of Labour re the timber industry has impelled mc to place before the public through the columns of your paper certain facts which may present a different complexion. Recently a friend with cash in hand called on five local mills for a quote re the necessary timber for a five-roomed liou.se —roughly £200 worth. In this then; was a variation of £80, and this between two mills side by side. Allowing at least a profit of Id per cent, this in all would mean at ordinary prices a profit of 50 per cent. Having made these facts known to the authorities, I was amazed at a 2/ per hundred tariff being inflicted on imported timbers. Does this not foster monopoly: I am, etc., ARTHUR CL'MMIXGS.
