BOWLING.

SUMMER SEASON COMMENCED.

MORE CLUBS STILL TO OPEN. (By TRUXDLER.) Glorious weather on Saturday enabled four city clubs to conduct their opening ceremony under perfect conditione, except for the greens being a little heavy with The rain of the previous fortnight. The president of the Auckland centre, Mr. James Pascoe, continued the system adopted during the last few rears, and paid an official visit to all the clubs concerned, accompanied by most of his officers. Now that the administration of the Dominion Bowling Association has been transferred to Auckland for a year, additional interest was lent to these visits by the fact that the party included the president of the DB.A., Mr. J. VV. Hardley, the two Auckland members of the council, Messrs. G. L. Gladding and J. M. Thomson, and the treasurer, Mr. A. H. Yeoman. The Press on the Green. The annual match for the Press and the Printers, which was to have been played against Carlton on the 9th, but was impossible on account of the heavy rain, had to be abandoned for this year, as so many of the participants were in the various official openings last Saturday. However, it was not altogether cancelled, for one rink accepted an ir.vitation to the Rawhiti opening, wheie they were very cordially received, and were met by a team consisting of the president, vice-president and two members or tlie committee. The visiting team consisted of the editors of the "Bowler's Annual," the "Observer"' and the -Herald," together with the bowling critic of the "Star." so that it could not have been very well more representative of the Press unless there had also been a fifth man to represent "that great luminary," whose approaching appearance in the firrnanent has already been foreshadowed by various significant signs and portents. As a matter of fact, they could have done with the proverbial '•fifth man," for they went down by one point, after a very fine game, filled with more than the usual ups and downs. A' Press team is a very common feature in all the official bowling functions in Sydney, but such a combination has not previously been seen in Auckland. ..,_„ f or Next Saturday, ilic . clubs are officially opening their summer reason next Saturday: Auckland, Carlton, Devonport, Dominion Road, Edendale, Ellerslie, Grey Lynn, Manurewa, Mount Albert, Onehunga, Ponsonby, Remuera, Rocky Nook, Stanley and Waitemata. Otahuhu are also holding their official ceremony, although the green was informally opened for play last Saturday. It must be about a record for sixteen city and suburban clubs to open on the same day, but they are all desirous of having everything clear for the following Monday, Labour Day, when holiday tournaments will be held by the following clubs:—Auckland, Avondale, Carlton, Devonport, Dominion Road, Edendale, Ellerslie, Epsom, Grey Lynn, Alourit Albert, Mount Eden, Onehunga, Otahuhu, Papatoetoe, i'onsonby, Rawhiti, Remuera, Rocky Nook, Takapuna, Waitemata and West End. Intending competitors will have a bewildering choice, as these all seem to be full rink tournaments on the usual terms, except that Onehunga are taking single entries, not teams, Avondale and Papatoetoe are club pairs, while the rinks at Devonport, Remuera and Rocky Nook are for club members only. The Epsom tourney is for members, by single entry. The Challenge Matches. The Denison Pins provided quite a sensational match last Wednesday, when the holders secured a tie on the last head, after a position which appeared hopeless. Holderg (Carlton), Mitchell, Barter, Cook, Kilgour 19, v. Challengers (Mount Eden), Oatridge, Rudd, Middleton, Tozer 19. Mount Eden were 5 up when the last head commenced, and were lying three when the skips went up, but with no position. Kilgour saw hie chance, and put the jack in the ditch for five, his opponent dropping short with his first, and rolling into the ditch with his second. Next Wednesday's challenge is from Onehunga. the team being G. S. Kennedy, A. C. Tonkin, J. Harlock, T. S. Bassett. The Edwin Stars are not played for during the summer, and will therefore remain in the possession of Epsom until next May, the holders being C. A. Lamb, E. J. Wilkinson, T. R. George and C. H. de Launay. By a coincidence the same club held them through last summer, the team on that occasion being C. J. Blakev, W. A. Gosling, E. J. Wilkinson and D. Crabtree. It does not appear to have been generally noticed that in discussing the possibility of squeezing in an extra match last Saturday, before closing down for the summer, the omission of a line of print partially obscured the fact that it was written with the impression that although Epsom and West End were opening last Saturday, Mount Eden were not opening till this "week. However, Mount Eden had also arranged to open last week. so that obviously the Epsom holders and the Mount Eden challengers would be in exactly the same position, whichever team won. and each would have had the same difficulty in arranging the extra match with West End. Bowlers Returning to New Zealand. Mr. George Redmond, Victoria Bowling Club, Wellington, who has spent the winter in Australia, writes to say that he is about the last New Zealander now in Sydney. All the winter visitors to Australia have been leaving for Maoriland during the last few weeks, like the curlew and the cuckoo, but they have not had a v ery seasonable reception, with all the floods, gales and snowstorms. Recent wanderers returning have included Mr. Walter Hunt, of the Masterton club, who came through Auckland. Messrs. Alex. Veitch and J. Hyams, Wellington Club, and Messrs. C. Davies and Marcus Marks. Victoria Club. He himself is not returning till early in November, a nd in the meantime he hopes to interest more people in the coming Dominion tournament. ' Amongst other interesting news, Mr. Redmond mentioned that for the fourth year in succession he was invited to the annual meeting of the New South Wales Howling Association, which was attended! oy SO delegates. Mr. Tom Yates, who is i known in Auckland, and who was recently elected president of the St. L-eorge Club for the sixth time, was at that meeting elected a vice-president of the association, co that if he comes over

! next January ne will attend in a dual capacity. Mr. Kedmond thinks that the party will include the president, Mr. J. Scott, and the late president, Mr. J. Wall, but of course nothing is definitely known yet as to who are coming to compete. !

I THE SEASON OPENS. j

OFFICIAL CEREMONIES. After disappointing weather during the past few weeks, bowlers were favoured with ideal conditions on Saturday, when a number of the clubs held official openings. Most of the greens were inclined to be heavy after the recent copious rainfall, but this did not mar the enjoyment of the games, and the day will be looked back upon as one of the pleasanlest, from a bowling point of new, with which the summer season has been greeted. TE AROHA CLUB. The 1026 season of the Te Aroha Bowling Club was officially opened by Mr. Samuel Sellars (president) on Saturday before a large attendance of bowlers and visitors. Beautiful weather prevailed, and the good condition of the greens was much commented upon. Visitors were present from Thames, l'aeroa, Karangahake, Morrinsville, Matamata and Hikutaia. Occasion was taken to present Mr. R. L. Somers (past president of the club) with a gold life member's badge in appreciation of services rendered Mr. Somers suitably replied, thanking the members for the high honour bestowed upon him. He referred to his having been a member of the nrst Te Aroha team to compete in the open competition at Rotorua twenty years ago. A number of club games were then played. ROTORUA CLUB. The opening game of the season was played between tenuis representing the president and viee-presideut. The contest resulted in a win for tbe president's side by 100 to !i:'i. INDOOR BOWLS. The hnal round of the indoor bowls competition held amongst the Orange Lodges was decided in the Orange Hall, Newton Road, on Thursday night when a ladies' team skipped by F. A. Harres was defeated by a men's team skipped by D. Francis. THE DOMINION PRESIDENT. The president of the Dominion Bowling Association, Mr. J. W. Hardley, and the president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. J. Pascoe, were contemplating a visit to Clevedon on Saturday to attend the official opening of the club, accompanied by a few of their officers. They found, however, that if they were to complete the round of the four city clubs, which were also opening, they could not very well spend more than a few minutes at Clevedon, even if they did manage to get there before the members dispersed. They therefore telegraphed their good wishes to the club, and intimated that a little later in the season they would arrange to spend a whole afternoon at Clevedon, instead of only the flying visit that they were proposing. Distance does not trouble the Auckland officials, and Mr. Hardley is meeting with a most enthusiastic reception to his proposal to make an official visit to every howling centre in the South Island next month. The centres and the clubs are already arranging festivities in his honour, and have sent for his approval their various schemes of entertainment, while tho South Island members of the Dominion Council are evidently bent on giving him their most hearty support. They propose to meet him at the various places, officially escort him to all the local fixtures, and then accompany him to where the president picks up tho next member. Given fine weather, it looks as if the proposed tour will be a brilliant success, and it promises to give a further impetus to a game which is already very popular in the South Island.
