GOVERNOR OF BENGAL.
HON. F. S. JACKSON APPOINTED. LONDON, October 15. An official announcement states that the Hon. F. S. Jackson will succeed the Earl of Lytton as Governor of Bengal, taking office in March. For some time the Hon. F. S. Jackson has been chairman of the Unionist party, but he is much better known to the "world as a cricketer. He played for Harrow, Cambridge, Yorkshire, and England. As an all-round cricketer he has had few equals, and as a batsman he probably had a better record of consistency in Test matches than any other English player before or since, with the possible exceptions of Hobbs and Sutcliffe. Time after time he made runs for England when they were
greatly needed. He was also an excellent bowler. As captain of England, Jackson created a record by winning the toss in all five Tests in a season. He never visited Australia, and retired from first-class cricket to enter politics while in his prime as a player. He has been in the House since 1915, and for two years was Financial Secretary to the War Office.
