DONATIONS RECEIVED. PRIZES AND A BURSARY. Eight further donations to the Auckland University College were received by the council at its meeting yesterday afternoon. Dr. McDougall presented three X-ray bulbs to the physics department; Mr. H. Goldie, an attractively framed picture of a kauri tree growing in the Waitakeres; the Cook Islands Department, 14 labelled specimens of hardwood from Cook Island; Mr. C. Burley, two creosoted oregon pine sleepers, to the School of Forestry; Mrs. Tolhurst (daughter of the late Canon Nelson, a former registrar of the college), a framed picture illustrative of Queen's College, Cambridge; Messrs. H. W. Airey, Ltd., an exhibit of artificial silk to the chemistry department. The Auckland Brick Manufacturers' Association offered to donate £125 to provide prizes of £25 a year for five years (the prizes to be £15 and £10). The prizes would be open for competition by students of the School of Architecture for the best design for a brick building. Draft conditions were enclosed. A prize or bursary, which is to be known as the "James Palmer Campbell Bursary," is to be created by a bequest from the estate of the late Hon. J. P. Campbell. The bequest is a sum of £500, the income of which is to be devoted to the payment of a prize or bursary to th* law student who obtained the greatest number of marks in the extra law subjects required for the annual barristers' law examination. At the request of the assistant lecturer in classics, Mr. James Mackintosh, the council accepted his resignation. Professor Algie, professor of law, reported that lie had been asked to deliver a short course of lectures and to give some special tuition to certain candidates who were preparing for the recently instituted examinations of the Auckland District Land Agents' Association. The professor offered as a donation to the council funds a sum of £20 or £25 which the association had agreed to pay. The High Commissioner informed the council by letter that advertisements were published during late August for a professor of economics, to fill the new chair of economics. Professors Pigon and Clay had agreed to act with the High Commissioner as a selection committee, giving recommendations in order of merit. The registrar said that he expected the recommendations to arrive at any time.
