SULPHUR IN RIVER.
—————— s PLATS HAVOC WITH EELS. RCAPEHU SUSPECTED. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, this day. A settler on the banks of the Wangaehu River reports that a few days ago the river rose suddenly, and there was a stronger smell of sulphur than he had noticed for some years past. The chemical mixture played havoc with eels and many were noticed floating on their backs, as if they had been boiled. The settler surmises there lias been some activity in the lake on Ruapehtt. which members of a recent, party reported was nearly cold, except for a small patch in the centre. The Wangaehu River is fed from this lake.
