TOO NARROW.

THE GRAFTON BRIDGE. CONGESTION OF TRAFFIC. i "We know that the bridge i 6 too narrow," said the Mayor to-day, when asked what steps the City Council was taking to cope with traffic congestion in the vicinity of Grafton Bridge. He explained that the council had under consideration the need of improving the bridge, and that, when the increase of traffic justified it, means might be taken to widen it. This would be facilitated'» as the council owned the property that would be affected, both as to the bridge itself and the approaches. At the time that the bridge was built it was proposed to make it double the width, but when the council, during the i Mayoralty of the late Sir Arthur Myers, gave instructions for the plans to be prepared, it was forced unwillingly to modify its proposals in order that a scheme could be placed before the ratei payers that would meet with their apj proval. It was considered that the J bridge would prove to be too narrow ; for the requirements of the growing ! city. ; "The question of the width of the bridge has been recently discussed by ; the council," said the Mayor, "but, at the present time, I have no statement ' to make in regard to that, as the matj ter is largely one of reconstructing tht I whole of tha bridge."
