LEAGUE TEAM'S SUCCESS.

DUFTY'S GREAT KICKING. MATCH HI A HIGH WIND, LEIGH BEATEN 23 TO Iβ. (By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright. , LONDON, SeptemberToT In the match against Leigh the New Zealand League team in all scored five tries and four goals to the Englishmen's four tries and two goals. There was an excellent attendance of 12,000, but a strong wind was blowing, which greatly interfered with the ;lay. The visitors had this behind them in the first half, and with its help gained a lead of 17 to ail. Making the most of the advantage thus derived. New Zealand pressed their opponents strongly, and severely taxed their defence. Dufty opened the scoring with a magnificent goal dropped from beyond halfway. Gardiner followed up by crowning two excellent pieces of concerted play with scores in the corner, from both of which Dufty kicked goals at a very difficult angle. With only one minute to go Carroll crossed under the poat3, and ajjain Dufty finished off with a goal.

On resuming Brown put in a wonderful run of seventy yards, and then passed to Davidson, who topped the effort off with an easy try. After this, Leigh, who now had the wind to asai*t then, put in their effort. They attacked vigorously, and pressed the visitors strongly for two-thirds of the remainder of the game. Blackburn, Clarkson, Osborae and Myers in turn got over, the last named scoring after a prolonged strusgle on the goal line and determined defence by the New Zealanders. From these scoria Clarkson and Moss kicked the only goals Leigh obtained. The visitors, however, were not done with, for just as time was about to be called, Herrinjr put in a powerful run and added another try to New Zea land's total. No goal was kicked, and the result left the visitors with victory by a comfortable lead. The Yew Zealand League team was: Dufty, Gardiner, Davidson, Brown, BrisK ane. Sanders. Hall. Devine. Carroll. Herring. Mason, Mouatt and Avery. The tourists occasionally showed brilliant combination, the backs supporting each other well, but they have not yet reached the excellence of other Dominion teams. The forwards are not yet able to get the ball in the scrums, and are often badly beaten in them. Besides the other, named in to-day's match, Hali was rery prominent among the backs.—(A. and S.Z. Cable.) MEET HAUTAX TOMORROW With two successes on end tae Dominion representatives have made a tine opening and though it 13 clear from the cables that they are handicapped by the inability of Carroll to hook the ball from tlie scruma, they are apparently playing fine football. Both against Dewsbury and Leigh they had to battle hard for victory and as neither of the teams mentioned figured prominently in last -oason's competitions in England it is only to be expected tlie opposition will vet stronger as the tour advances. ToTorrow the New Zealanders will meet Halifax. The latter did not do very well last =eason and at the wind-up tijnired thirteenth on the list. In all "hey played 3S matches, winning 19, losing 17, and two were drawn. From rhis we may expert the New Zealanders to win asnin.
