FIRE AT MILFORD.
EARLY MORNING BLAZE. CONTENTS OF SHOP DESTROYED. A fire broke out at about half past two this morning in a block of six brick shops at Milford, known as Gee's Buildings, and owned by Mr. P. S. Gee. The outbreak originated in the shop occupied by Mr. C. E. Wood, draper, and the damage was confined to it and the next one, occupied by Mr. D. N. Davidson, chemist. The alarm was given by Mr. Gee, who lives in a house situated behind the shops. Occupants of the house who were sleeping on the verandah at the back were roused by the smell of smoke, and on going to the front saw the reflection of the fire through the windows. The brigade was promptly on the scene and prevented the fire from spreading. The stock in Mr. Woods shop was practically totally destroyed, that which escaped the fire being badly damaged by smoke and water. The ceiling in Mr. Davidson's shop was slightly damaged by fire and the stock by smoke and water. The whole of the block of shops is insured in the Insurance Office of Australia for £1500, the amount on the part damaged being £250. The stock and fittings of Mr. Wood's shop are insured in the Southern Union Office for £1150 and those of Mr. Davidson's in the same office for £500.
