At the bottom of this crater, at the St. Helier's Bay camp, is the western entrance to the rail-way deviation tunnel which is to run under the St. Helier's Road. The approach to the entrance was reached via another tunnel and a shaft then sent down, and this huge hole excavated. Later the hill above the approach tunnel will be taken away for spoil. This picture shows the mixer at work blending the material for concreting the tunnel, a work which is now well under way.
