The old and the new — portion of the deviation of eight miles in length of the Main South Road, near Pokeno, which is being constructed by the Public Works Department to eliminate the notorious Bombay Hills section, where present grades average one in twelve, and in one instance is one in six. The picture shows the most southerly part of the deviation on the south side of Pokeno. In the middle background is shown Hairpin Bend, a corner on the Main South Road well known to motorists.
