BUSINESS LOST TO BRITAIN.
ORDER PLACED IN AMERICA. EFFECT OF THE COAL STRIKE. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHKISTCHURCH, this day. In connection with the erection of the concert hall, the Concert Hall Committee reported to last night's meeting ot the City Council that the architect had informed the committee that, as a result of the strike among the miners m Britain and the consequent limited output from the steel works, the contractor for the erection of the hall was unable to obtain delivery of the main girder within eight months. Inquiries had heen made, and the contractor stated that it was possible to place an order in America and obtain delivery in about three months, "but it was estimated that this would entail an additional cost of about £214. Unless the council was prepared to meet this expense, the contractor stated that it would be necessary to suspend building operations until such time as the girder could be procured from Britain. As the committee desired to have the erection of the hall completed as .early as possible, it recommended that authority be given to place the order in America, provided that the additional cost did not exceed £214. The report was adopted and the neces•arc authority given.
