SOCIALISTIC PROGRAMME.

THE NEW GREEK PREMIER,

CAPITAL LEVY AND CHEAPER LIVING. ATHENS, August 30. General Kondylis, the new Greek Premier, has announced a Socialist programme to bring peace and prosperity to the people. lit says that if his party is successful at the forthcoming elections he will introduce the capital levy and

proportional representation, and legislate generally to bring about cheaper living and greater comfort to the masses.

The Liberals have nominated M. Venizelos, a recent former Greek Premier, for the Parliamentary elections.— (A. and N.Z.) STRUCK A ROCK. JAP. STEAMER WRECKED. VANCOUVER, August 30. The Japanese steamer Kaikyu Maru, en route from Vancouver to Yokohama, struck a rock off the Aleutian Islands and was wrecked. Though the boilers of the vessel exploded the crew managed to make their escape in lifeboats.— (A. and N.Z.)

The Kaikyu was a twin screw steamer of 8134 tons, built in Japan in 1919.

COBHAM'S FLIGHT. ADELAIDE LEFT. SECOND MECHANIC TAKEN. ADELAIDE, August 30. Mr. Cobham left Adelaide to-day in continuation of his return flight to England.— (A. and N.Z.)

With the object of speeding up the return trip it was decided at Melbourne to take Mr. Capel, the engineer sent out by the Armstrong-Whitworth firm, back, in addition to Sergeant Ward. Mr, Cobham will thus have two mechanics, and will be able to reduce the time spent in looking after the engine during stops. He will also be able to rest more himself, so that he will not suffer any undue strain when flying. It is anticipated that by this means he will be able to fly an extra hour or more on each stage. "THEY'RE ALL PRETTY." THE GIRLS OF AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, August 25. "Never in any other part of the world have I seen such a complete absence of really plain girls as in Sydney and Melbourne," declared Captain Alan Cobham, the world flyer, to-day. "All the Australian girls seem to be pretty, and all of them are good dancers. It doesn't matter what unfamiliar steps one does your partner always follows. Not one of the girls I met bored mc. They didn't enthuse or ask questions about my flying. Neither did tliey talk a lot of piffle. T found them most restful. "Another thing I admired was that most of them seem to be small and lithe, and have trim feet and ankles. As for women and flying, it is they who are going to help by encouraging the menfolk, especially in the country districts." Then lie adds, "The interest in aviation here is so great that I see no reason for hurrying away." A CRYING CANINE. DOG'S OCCULT SENSE. KNEW DISTANT TRAGEDY. LONDON, August 25. Marcia Jackson, aged 19, and her sister Edith, aged 21, went for a holiday from Leeds to Morecambe Bay (Westmoreland), 50 miles away, leaving their pet fox-terrier at their mother's home. Their mother was awakened before midnight by the dog's pitiful howlings and found the animal with tears streaming down its face. The bodies of the girls, who had left their boarding-house to listen to an evening band performance, were found on Morecambe beach next morning, 300 yards apart, coatless and hatless and without shoes or stockings. Apparently they had been paddling and had been drowned in the rough sea.
