LABOURERS' WAGES.
DISCUSSION AT O^fEHUXGA
The question of labourers' wages wa3 discussed by the Onehunga Borough Council last evening,'when a recommendation was received from the committee' that the men be paid 1/10 per hour. The Mayor (Mr. J. K. Cowell) adopted the usual course by moving that the recommendation be adopted.
Cr. J, E. Green moved a3 an amendment that the inori be paid 1/lOi per hour. Pie said that thi3 rate of pay to. labourers was agreed upon at a recent conference of representatives of local bodies. Ho voted for the proposal as the council's representative at that conference, and he believed that all the other parties to the conference were carrying , out tho airreement. In answer to the Mayor, Mr. (!reen said the agreement applied to all men on work provided by the unemployment loan. The Mayor paid he did not know this when he moved tho adoption of the committee's recommendation. The council should abide liv the asreement. The committee bad leroinmnnded 1/10 per hour. as it wa> fonnd m- e-.-ary to economise with the Imroujjh finances.
Mr. W. (_'. GjMieutt, in seconding the resolution, said if the- council wanted to econo!iii.~o they should with the higher-paid employees, and not with tho labourers. After further discussion the figures named in the recommendation were altered to read 1/lOJ and agreed to.
