FATAL AIR SMASH.
JOHN RODGERS KILLED. FRISCO-HAWAII FLYER. NEW YORK, August 29. Commander John Rodgere, who became world-famous by reason of an almost successful flight from San Francisco to Hawaii in September last, was killed when his machine crashed at Philadelphia-
Commander Rodgers' aeroplane fell into the Delaware River. He was rescued by some seamen and sent to hospital, where it was found that he had sustained a broken leg, other serious injuries, and shock, from which he later died.
Samuel Sehultz, the mechanic, who was with the commander, was also badly injured, and he is reported to be in a critical condition.—(A. and N.Z.)
Two U.S. naval machines attempted the flight from San Francisco to Hawaii. One machine went only 300 miles, but Rodgers was not forced down urftil when almost within eight of Honolulu. The airmen, after a perilous time on the water, were rescued by destroyers.
