BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES;

SELECTING THE GREENS,

(By TRUXDLER.)

Last Saturday dawned inauspieiously for the full-rink tournament at Ellerslie, and the heavy rain at noon made the prospects appear hopeless. However, it cleared up in time for a start to be made before two o'clock, and by reducing the games to nine heads the three rounds were concluded just before the rain came again. The teams skipped by E. T. Ricnmond and E. F. Jones (Epsom) headed one section without a loss, and G. Clark's team put Mount Albert at the top of the other section. Three more rounds are to be played next Saturday afternoon.

The president the club (Mr. \V. L. Gavey) welcomed the competitors in a short address, while Mrs. Gavey's excellent arrangements for afternoon tea were much appreciated by all. The Edwin Stars have gone to Grey Lynn, Whittle's team defeating Wishart's Carlton team last Saturday. It will be interesting to see how long the club holds them this time, their first challengers being from Onehunga (G. B. Kennedy, J. Harlock, A. A. Kenny, T. S. Bassett).

Grey Lynn have had wonderful success in holding Stars on previous occasions, but a competitor who has been diving into ancient history states that the record is held by a Remuera team (S. Somerfield, C. W. Garrard, A. I. Farmer, X. McKobie), who successfully resisted every challenge for about five years, finally losing them in 1915 to Dominion Road (Dr. Moir's team). Until then it was customary to play for the Stars during the summer, at any irregular time that would suit the competitors; but with the introduction of winter play it became purely a winter competition, to be played every Saturday, and it is now so popular that the challenging list is always full. At present there are still 10 challengers in, which will carry well into next winter.

It may be mentioned that next Friday it will be 23 years since these trophies were presented to the Eemuera Club by the late Captain Edwin, the Government Meteorologist, and those who got caught in the rain last Saturday must have sighed for the good old days when the gallant captain had charge of the weather, for most people reckon that he regulated it far better than it is done now. Encouraging the Smaller Clubs.

The Eawhiti Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club are holding a social and dance in St. Aidan's Hall on Monday evening. This is another club, in addition to those mentioned in the Sports Edition on Saturday, which must not be overlooked when the selection committee are deciding where to play the various sections at the Christmas tournament and the Dominion tournament, for the green has recently been very greatly improved.

A very practical suggestion has been made, that in choosing the greens it might be possible to use different ones for the two tournaments. This would achieve the double purpose of relieving the strain on the eight or ten which every year seem to bear the brunt of the work, besides encouraging some of the smaller clubs to improve their greens. Four years ago the Christmas tournament was held at Carlton, Ponsonby, Mount Eden, Dominion Road, Onehunga, Epsom and Auckland, and all of these were used again for the Dominion tournament three weeks later. By choosing a different set of greens for the earlier tournament it would undoubtedly increase the interest in both events, and it is hoped that far more will be found in good enough order to play a section next Christmas.

Ellerslie last Saturday was a good illustration of the inteVest taken in a tournament. In addition to all the members, whether playing or not, there was quite a gathering of the general public, and the same local interest would be seen at a big tournament, thus increasing the popularity of the club, whereas at the larger clubs the members and adjoining residents are surfeited with tournaments, and take no notice of them.

Daylight Saving. The defeat of the Summer Time Bill came as a bitter disappointment to Auckland in general and the bowlers in particular, for all the objections have been so fully answered that it looked as if it would go through this time. Of course, nobody takes seriously all the vague platitudes about decreasing production, and" the "detrimental influence on the primary industries," for all who took the trouble to read the evidence before the committee of the House would remember how conclusively it was proved that it would not affect milking and haymaking, as the farmers would always be free to choose their own time. The amazing feature of the voting- is that the sixteen against the bill included the whole eight Auckland members, not a single one supporting it. One can readily understand the two Southland members not supporting it, for the summer evenings in that latitude are already so long that there is no desperate call for another hour. But in a sub-tropical latitude like Auckland, where darkness sets in all too soon, opposition seems utterly inexplicable. However, Mr. Sidey has set a wonderful example in cheerfully accepting defeat, just like a bowler, and bowlers will also have to accept it philosophically— until next year.
